Vero App Vs Instagram | Should you Switch?

In this post, i’m going to reveal 3 things wrong with Instagram and 5 things Vero does better, Let’s dive in.

3 Problems with Instagram?

Facebook (Meta) which owns Instagram reported its financial results for the 1st quarter of 2022. User growth has slowed down for the first time in the company’s history, as Facebook’s daily active users (DAUs) were 1.92 billion, in Q4, 2021 down from the prior quarter by 0.05%. Here are some reasons why users are getting frustrated with the platform.

1. Lack of Innovation

Meta’s strategy has really been what I call the “fast follow”. They identify successful platforms and then either buy or copy them. Facebook, originally acquired Instagram in 2012, for $1 billion. Then they “copied” Snapchat Stories. Then after, I “copied” or got inspired by TikTok with Reels.

2. Reach Has been Killed

Social Media platforms work on supply/demand. When the platforms are new, usually content is scarce thus reach is better. Instagram’s algorithm has restricted reach because they want you to pay for advertisement and there is just so much content. Going Viral is very difficult to do now unless you’ve already got a plethora of established pages.

3. Reels Favoured by Algorithm

In an effort to compete with TikTok, Instagram has favored Reels by the algorithm. This caused many photographers to get upset and this even annoyed one of the Kardashians, Kylie Jenner. She wanted the old, Instagram back…and you don’t want to annoy the Kardashians. This prompted a response from the head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri.

What does Vero do better?

“The company’s mission is to connect people meaningfully”  and thus the company has strong values.

1. More Variety

You can post images, you can post about your favorite Books, music, and games. This really helps to give a 360’ perspective of you as a human being. Social Media apps have been slated in the past for various false personas. You can also post links which is great for external websites or products. Instagram, only has one link in the bio.

2. Full Resolution Photos

On Vero, when you post a photo you actually get the full resolution version when you click on it. But it is slightly compressed in the feed. Also if you post a horizontal photo, you can turn your phone sideways and view it in the feed which is great for photographers especially.

Even the way the posts, take up a large portion of the screen. I find this more engaging and not as fast-paced, as Instagram which encourages “scrolling” rather than observing carefully. For example, you wouldn’t rush around an art gallery in 5 minutes.

3. Segmented Friend Lists

So on Instagram when you do a post, it goes out to everyone, even if you don’t want certain people to see it such as past partners, work colleagues etc. Whereas, on Vero, you can share a post to close friends, friends, acquaintances, everyone. Instagram only allows this segmentation on story posts at the time of writing.

4. Customize Posts by Feed Type.

You can customize the type of posts you are seeing from friends. So if one friend is posting all music and want to see images you can tailor your feed.

5. Daily Usage Monitor

There is a “setting” in the “settings”, where you can monitor how many minutes used the app. This helps to stop addiction.

Bonus: Desktop and Ipad App available on Vero.

Final Thoughts

Instagram is still the king with over 1.4 billion monthly active users. However, there is nothing wrong with experimenting with new platforms and who knows you may become an “early adopter” and take advantage of a technology tipping point which propels you to social media stardom.
